MSC Reveals Catalina Sugar Beach, a New Caribbean Stop for MSC Opera

MSC Cruises has revealed the name and new details for Catalina Sugar Beach, an upgraded Caribbean beach destination opening in the Dominican Republic in November 2026.

Located on Catalina Island just off the coast of La Romana, the destination will feature white-sand beaches, clear water, dining, drinks, water sports and private cabanas.

MSC Opera will visit Catalina Sugar Beach on every itinerary when it begins weekly cruises from La Romana this November.

What Is Catalina Sugar Beach?

Catalina Sugar Beach is MSC’s newly branded and upgraded beach area on Catalina Island.

Catalina Island already receives visitors, so MSC is not creating a completely new island or port. Instead, MSC Group is improving an existing beach destination with new facilities designed to provide a more comfortable and organized day ashore.

The island is a protected Natural Monument known for its beaches, clear water and surrounding coral reefs.

What Will MSC Guests Find There?

The center of Catalina Sugar Beach will be an open-air beach pavilion serving an international buffet and Dominican specialties. Shaded dining areas will overlook the beach.

Guests will also find two bars, including a tropical palapa bar, along with loungers, rentable daybeds and private cabanas.

A new water-sports center will offer equipment for exploring the surrounding water. MSC is also adding upgraded restrooms, showers and changing facilities.

A landscaped pathway will lead through the island’s vegetation to a scenic viewpoint, with informational displays highlighting local plant life along the way.

What Excursions Will Be Available?

Guests can spend the day relaxing at Catalina Sugar Beach or book excursions around the Dominican Republic.

Planned options include snorkeling, catamaran trips, boat rides to Isla Saona and visits to the Cave of Wonders and Altos de Chavón. Final excursion prices have not yet been released.

MSC Opera Will Visit on Every Itinerary

Catalina Sugar Beach will become an important part of MSC Opera’s new year-round Southern Caribbean program.

Beginning November 16, 2026, MSC Opera will operate weekly seven-night cruises from La Romana. Guests will also be able to combine two itineraries into a 14-night back-to-back cruise. This will mark MSC Cruises’ first year-round deployment in the Southern Caribbean.

Every itinerary will include Catalina Sugar Beach, giving guests a dedicated beach day close to the ship’s new homeport. Explora Journeys will also include the destination on selected future itineraries, but MSC Opera will be its most frequent MSC visitor.
