MSC Sandy Cay: Everything We Know About MSC’s New Private Island

MSC is expanding its private island presence in The Bahamas with Sandy Cay, a completely new island destination planned next to Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

The new island is expected to open in 2028 and will be available to guests sailing with both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys.

MSC is describing it as a smaller, quieter and more elevated alternative to Ocean Cay, with a greater focus on seclusion, natural surroundings and luxury.

At the same time, Ocean Cay is receiving its own major expansion. New restaurants, family attractions, an adults-only beach and a pier capable of handling two ships are all expected to arrive before Sandy Cay opens.

What Is Sandy Cay?

Sandy Cay will be a separate private island located adjacent to Ocean Cay in the western Bahamas. The project was originally revealed under the internal name “Little Cay” before MSC officially announced the Sandy Cay name in April 2026.

MSC says the island was designed as an “intimate complement” to Ocean Cay rather than a replacement or simple extension of it. The company is positioning Sandy Cay as a more secluded escape where guests can enjoy a quieter connection with the ocean and the natural beauty of The Bahamas.

Pierfrancesco Vago, Executive Chairman of MSC Cruises, has said Sandy Cay will be approximately one-third the size of Ocean Cay. Despite the original "Little Cay" name, it appears that the island will still be large enough to offer multiple beach and resort areas.

Why Is It Called Sandy Cay?

The name comes from the island’s bright aragonite sand. MSC describes it as some of the purest and brightest sand in the world, giving Sandy Cay the white beaches shown throughout the initial rendering.

Aragonite sand is commonly associated with the bright white beaches and clear turquoise water found throughout The Bahamas. MSC says the sand will help define the island’s more natural and serene atmosphere.

What Will Sandy Cay Have?

MSC has not yet released a complete list of Sandy Cay’s restaurants, beaches, pools, bars or activities.

However, the first official rendering gives us an idea of what the destination could eventually look like. It shows a distinctive branching island design with several protected coves, sandy beach areas, pools, buildings and what appears to be a small arrival or marina area.

Several reports have noted that the rendering appears to show at least three pools and multiple sheltered lagoons. It also appears to include a large group of solar panels, although MSC has not formally explained the island’s energy systems or confirmed every feature visible in the concept art.

Because this is an early rendering, the final layout could still change before the island opens. For now, MSC has only officially promised a more intimate, elevated and immersive private island experience.

Who Will Be Able to Visit Sandy Cay?

Sandy Cay is being developed for both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests. Explora Journeys is MSC Group’s separate luxury cruise brand, operating smaller ships with a more upscale experience than the traditional MSC Cruises fleet.

This helps explain why MSC is emphasizing luxury and seclusion in the Sandy Cay announcement. The island will need to work for passengers arriving on large MSC cruise ships while also fitting the more exclusive style of Explora Journeys.

MSC has not announced whether the two brands will visit on different days, use separate sections of the island or receive different services while ashore.

There is also no confirmation that Sandy Cay will be exclusive to MSC Yacht Club guests. Regular MSC passengers, Yacht Club passengers and Explora Journeys guests are all expected to have some form of access, but the exact rules have not been published.

When Will Sandy Cay Open?

Sandy Cay is scheduled to welcome its first guests in 2028.

MSC has since confirmed that passengers sailing during its Summer 2028 Caribbean season will be among the first guests to experience the new island. Those cruises are already available to book from Miami and Port Canaveral, although MSC has not yet identified every itinerary that will include a Sandy Cay visit.

That means booking an MSC Caribbean cruise for 2028 does not currently guarantee a stop at Sandy Cay. Guests should wait until MSC publishes specific port schedules before choosing a sailing primarily for the new island.

How Will Sandy Cay Be Different From Ocean Cay?

Ocean Cay is a 95-acre destination with two miles of beachfront, multiple public beaches, bars, casual dining, excursions and direct access from the ship. It was designed to give guests plenty of room to spread out and enjoy a relatively relaxed beach day.

Sandy Cay appears to be taking a different approach. It will be smaller, more contained and more resort-like, with sheltered coves and a design that may offer more separation between different areas.

MSC’s repeated use of words like intimate, secluded, elevated and immersive suggests that Sandy Cay will offer a more premium experience than the current general Ocean Cay setup.

What we do not know is whether that premium experience will cost extra. MSC has not confirmed whether admission will be included with the cruise, whether guests will need to purchase an excursion or day pass, or whether certain pools, beaches and dining areas will carry additional charges.

Ocean Cay Is Also Getting a Major Expansion

Sandy Cay is only one part of MSC’s private island plans. Ocean Cay itself is scheduled to receive several major additions by late 2027.

Four new dining experiences will be added, bringing Ocean Cay to a total of seven food venues. The additions will include a signature specialty restaurant along with new buffet and food market options. MSC has not yet revealed the restaurant names, menus or which options will be complimentary.

Seakers Cove will become a dedicated family beach with a children’s playground, splash pad and ropes course featuring water elements. The area will also have ping-pong, foosball, interactive games, tournaments and organized family activities.

Adults will receive a new retreat called Paradise Sands. MSC says the area will operate as a peaceful adults-only beach during the day before becoming a sunset cocktail destination later in the evening.

Ocean Cay will also receive a wider selection of rental cabanas and a new MSC Foundation experience called “Shifting Perspective.” The conservation attraction will include hands-on experiences connected to coral restoration, scientific research and ocean ecosystems.

Ocean Cay Will Be Able to Handle Two Ships

One of the biggest changes may be the expanded Ocean Cay pier.

Construction has already begun on an extension that will allow two cruise ships to dock at Ocean Cay simultaneously. The project is scheduled for completion in late 2027. Guests will still be able to walk directly from their ship onto the island rather than using tender boats.

Two ships could mean a significant increase in the number of people visiting Ocean Cay on the same day. The new restaurants, family area, adults-only beach and expanded cabana selection should help spread passengers around the island, but it will be interesting to see how crowded the beaches feel when both berths are occupied.

Sandy Cay could eventually help spread guests out even further. However, MSC has not said whether Sandy Cay will have its own cruise ship pier, whether guests will travel there from Ocean Cay by boat, or whether ships will call at the two destinations separately.

What We Still Don’t Know About Sandy Cay

As of July 2026, several important questions remain unanswered.

MSC has not confirmed how guests will travel to the island, which amenities will be included, whether food and drink packages will work there, how cabanas will be priced or whether MSC Yacht Club guests will receive exclusive benefits.

We also do not know whether a cruise will visit both Ocean Cay and Sandy Cay during the same call, or whether the two islands will appear as separate destinations on future itineraries.

More details will likely be released as construction progresses and MSC begins assigning Sandy Cay to specific 2028 sailings.

My Take on MSC’s New Private Island

Personally, I think the most interesting part of Sandy Cay is that MSC does not appear to be building another version of Ocean Cay.

Ocean Cay’s biggest strength is its open, relatively natural and beach-focused atmosphere. Rather than filling it with massive waterparks and thrill attractions, MSC seems to be using Sandy Cay to create a separate, more polished island experience.

That could give guests a real choice. Ocean Cay can remain the larger destination for a traditional beach day, while Sandy Cay offers smaller coves, pools and a more secluded resort atmosphere.

The biggest question will be how much of Sandy Cay is included in the cruise fare. If the island becomes primarily a collection of paid beach clubs, cabanas and specialty experiences, it may feel less exciting for regular MSC guests. If basic access, beaches, pools and food are included, it could become a major advantage for MSC’s Caribbean cruises.

Final Thoughts

Sandy Cay is scheduled to open next to Ocean Cay in 2028, giving MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests an entirely new private island destination in The Bahamas.

While the final attractions have not been announced, MSC is promising a smaller, quieter and more elevated escape built around white aragonite sand, clear water and a stronger sense of seclusion.

Combined with Ocean Cay’s upcoming restaurants, family beach, adults-only retreat, conservation experience and two-ship pier, this represents a major expansion of MSC’s presence in The Bahamas.

There is still plenty we do not know, but Sandy Cay could become one of MSC’s most important new destinations when it opens in 2028.
