MSC Sandy Cay Could Open in Late 2027: What Yacht Club Guests Are Hearing

MSC Sandy Cay may be closer than we originally thought.
MSC Group officially announced Sandy Cay in April, describing the new private island next to Ocean Cay as a quieter and more elevated destination scheduled to welcome its first guests in 2028.
However, we are now hearing something slightly different from guests currently staying in MSC Yacht Club.
Several Yacht Club guests have reported being told onboard that Sandy Cay is expected to begin welcoming guests in late 2027, potentially around the same time Ocean Cay’s second cruise pier and other major island upgrades are completed.
That earlier opening date has not been officially announced by MSC, so plans could still change. MSC’s most recent public information continues to say 2028.
For now, think of late 2027 as an interesting development to watch, not a confirmed opening date.
Who Will Be Able to Visit Sandy Cay?
The information being shared with Yacht Club guests suggests Sandy Cay will serve MSC Yacht Club guests and Explora Journeys guests, creating a much more exclusive alternative to the main Ocean Cay experience.
That would fit with how MSC has described the island so far. Sandy Cay is being designed as a smaller, quieter and more elevated retreat rather than simply another version of Ocean Cay. MSC has officially confirmed that guests from both MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys will have access, although its public announcement has not specifically confirmed that access from MSC Cruises will be limited to Yacht Club.
Guests are also being told that Yacht Club passengers would be transported over to Sandy Cay by tender or smaller boat from the Ocean Cay area. MSC has not yet publicly explained exactly how transportation to Sandy Cay will work.
The Timing With Ocean Cay Makes Sense
Late 2027 would be an interesting time for Sandy Cay to open because Ocean Cay itself is about to become much busier.
MSC is extending Ocean Cay’s pier so that two cruise ships can dock at the island at the same time. The new berth is officially scheduled for completion in late 2027, and published cruise schedules are already showing two-ship days beginning around that time.
MSC is also making several changes designed to give those additional guests more places to spread out.
- Four additional dining experiences
- A newly upgraded Seakers Cove Family Beach
- A splashpad and ropes course
- More cabanas
- A new adults-only beach called Paradise Sands
- Expanded relaxation areas
Those improvements are also scheduled for late 2027.
Could Sandy Cay Help Keep Yacht Club Feeling Exclusive?
This may be where Sandy Cay becomes particularly important.
Ocean House Beach is currently reserved exclusively for MSC Yacht Club guests, with its own restaurant, bar, butler service and private beach area. MSC’s current Ocean Cay information still clearly identifies Ocean House Beach as Yacht Club-only.
If Yacht Club guests eventually move to Sandy Cay instead, it raises an interesting question about what happens to Ocean House.
There is some speculation that Ocean House could eventually become available to more Ocean Cay guests, but MSC has not announced any change to Ocean House access. For now, it remains exclusively for Yacht Club.
Still, the pieces would fit together. Sandy Cay could provide Yacht Club with a larger, more purpose-built private island experience, while Paradise Sands, the expanded Seakers Cove and potentially other areas of Ocean Cay help spread out guests when two large MSC ships are visiting at once.
Sandy Cay Will Be Very Different From Ocean Cay
MSC is not positioning Sandy Cay as a second Ocean Cay.
The company describes it as an “intimate complement” to the existing island, with a stronger focus on seclusion, nature and a more elevated experience. Official renderings show several protected coves and pools surrounded by bright Bahamian sand.
MSC has not yet revealed restaurants, bars, cabanas, pools or other specific amenities, although the company says additional details are still to come.
What We Know So Far
There are really two timelines to keep in mind.
Officially, MSC says Sandy Cay will welcome its first MSC Cruises and Explora Journeys guests in 2028.
Unofficially, Yacht Club guests are now being told onboard that the island could begin operating in late 2027, with Yacht Club guests transported over from Ocean Cay.
That would put Sandy Cay’s debut right alongside one of the biggest transformations Ocean Cay has seen since opening: two ships docking simultaneously, new restaurants, expanded family areas and the new Paradise Sands adults-only beach.
We will be watching this one closely. If the late 2027 timeline is confirmed, Yacht Club guests sailing toward the end of next year could be among the very first to experience Sandy Cay.
