MSC Specialty Dining Packages Explained: Are They Worth It?

MSC Specialty Dining Packages Explained: Are They Worth It?

MSC Cruises has a growing lineup of specialty restaurants, from Butcher’s Cut and Kaito Teppanyaki to Eataly, Hola! Tacos and several ship-specific venues.

If you already know you want to try a few of them, MSC’s specialty dining packages can be an easy way to bundle several meals together before your cruise.

But the packages work a little differently than simply paying one price and ordering anything you want. Here is what to know before buying one.

How Do MSC Specialty Dining Packages Work?

On ships using MSC’s newer dining package system, guests can purchase packages that include 2, 3 or 4 specialty dining meals.

Instead of being locked into a predetermined combination of restaurants, the newer packages give you more freedom to choose where you want to eat.

Each package is personal and cannot be shared or transferred to another guest.

MSC introduced the newer package format in 2025, although some ships with fewer specialty restaurants continue to use the older dining-package system.

MSC 2 vs 3 vs 4-Meal Dining Packages

Package Best For
2 Meals Guests who already have two must-try restaurants
3 Meals A good balance for many 7-night cruises
4 Meals Guests who want specialty dining to be a bigger part of the cruise

There isn’t necessarily one package that offers the best value for everyone.

I think the 3-meal option makes the most sense for many week-long cruises. It gives you several specialty nights without taking too much time away from the Main Dining Room or other included restaurants.

On ships like MSC World America or MSC Meraviglia, where there are several specialty restaurants to choose from, the 4-meal package can be much easier to justify.

What’s Included With Each Specialty Dining Meal?

MSC’s current packages include a fixed-price, multi-course dining menu. MSC says each meal includes at least one starter, one main course and one dessert.

That does not mean absolutely everything on the restaurant’s regular menu is included.

Certain premium dishes can carry an additional supplement, so it is worth checking the package menu before ordering if you want to avoid an extra charge.

Gratuities are included in prepaid dining packages.

Drinks are not included as part of the dining package itself.

Which Restaurants Can You Choose?

The newer 2-, 3- and 4-meal packages can generally be used across participating specialty restaurants on your ship.

The biggest exception is Butcher’s Cut, which MSC currently limits to one visit per dining package. MSC’s published terms also specify a similar one-use restriction for Le Grill on MSC Euribia.

You can otherwise make repeat reservations at the same participating restaurant with a multi-meal package.

When Can You Make Specialty Dining Reservations?

Buying a dining package does not automatically reserve your restaurants or dining times.

MSC currently says package holders can make reservations at least 30 days before departure, subject to availability.

If there is a restaurant or dining time you really want, I would not wait until you’re onboard to book it.

This is especially important for popular restaurants and prime dinner times on larger ships.

Should You Buy the Package Before the Cruise?

Usually, yes, if you already know you’re going to use it.

MSC offers discounted pricing for dining packages purchased before sailing compared with purchasing onboard. Pre-cruise purchases are generally available until 48 hours before departure.

Exact pricing can vary by ship, itinerary and sailing, so the easiest way to compare your options is through your MyMSC account.

Most packages can also be purchased onboard at full price, subject to availability.

There is one exception: MSC’s Welcome Aboard dining offer, when available for your sailing, must be purchased before the cruise.

Can You Use the Same Restaurant More Than Once?

Yes, with the newer 2-, 3- and 4-meal packages.

You could theoretically use multiple meals at the same participating restaurant if that is what you prefer.

The major exception is Butcher’s Cut, which can only be booked once using the package. MSC also lists Le Grill on Euribia as limited to one package visit in its current dining terms.

What Happens If You Don’t Use Every Meal?

Use them or lose them!!

Currently, MSC states that unused meals in a multi-meal dining package are non-refundable.

That is another reason I would not automatically buy the largest package. Think realistically about how many nights you actually want to spend in specialty restaurants before purchasing four meals.

What About Kids?

Children under 3 dine complimentary.

MSC currently offers children ages 3 through 12 a dedicated kids menu for a fixed charge. MSC’s U.S. specialty dining information currently lists that kids menu at $12, although pricing and rules can change.

If you’re traveling as a family, check the pricing shown for your specific cruise before purchasing adult dining packages for everyone.

Do All MSC Ships Use the New Dining Packages?

No, and this is an important detail.

MSC says ships with two or fewer specialty dining options may continue using its older dining-package structure rather than the newer flexible 2-, 3- and 4-meal system.

MSC currently lists MSC Fantasia, Splendida, Divina, Preziosa, Orchestra, Poesia, Magnifica and Musica among the ships that may continue using the older format.

Package availability can also change as ships add or modify restaurants, so always check the dining options shown for your individual sailing.

What If You’re Staying in MSC Yacht Club?

MSC Yacht Club already includes access to its own private restaurant, which serves breakfast, lunch and dinner throughout the cruise.

Specialty restaurants are separate and are not automatically included simply because you’re staying in Yacht Club.

That means a dining package may be harder to justify for some Yacht Club guests. The private Yacht Club Restaurant is already one of the better dining experiences onboard, and skipping it for four nights may not appeal to everyone.

On the other hand, if there are several specialty venues you specifically want to experience, you can still purchase specialty dining separately.

Yacht Club guests also receive additional service benefits when arranging specialty dining, including priority assistance with reservations.

Are MSC Specialty Dining Packages Worth It?

I think they can be, but I would buy one based on the restaurants you actually want to visit rather than simply because a package is available.

If you already know you want to eat at three different specialty restaurants, purchasing a package before sailing gives you a straightforward way to bundle those meals while taking advantage of MSC’s pre-cruise pricing.

If you’re only interested in one restaurant, paying for a single specialty dinner may make more sense.

And for Yacht Club guests, I would be even more selective. You are already paying for access to the Yacht Club Restaurant, so I would choose specialty dining because there is a particular restaurant or experience you genuinely want to try, not because you feel like you need to upgrade your food.

The Bottom Line

MSC’s newer specialty dining packages are much more flexible than the old predetermined restaurant combinations.

The ability to choose 2, 3 or 4 meals, select your own participating restaurants and even revisit certain venues makes them easier to tailor to your cruise.

My advice: look at the restaurants available on your specific ship first, pick the ones you actually want to try, and then decide whether a package makes sense.

For many 7-night cruisers, three specialty meals will probably be plenty. But on ships with MSC’s largest restaurant lineups, it may not take long to fill all four.
