MSC World America vs Carnival Destiny

By Jack Schaeffer

MSC World America vs Carnival Destiny

Carnival just revealed Carnival Destiny, the first ship in its brand-new Ace Class, and it immediately creates an interesting comparison with MSC World America.

Both are massive ships designed around Caribbean cruising, family activities, dining, entertainment, and bringing guests closer to the ocean. But Carnival Destiny will be even larger than MSC World America and carry significantly more passengers when it debuts in summer 2029.

There is one important catch: MSC World America is already sailing, while Carnival has only revealed the first details about Destiny. We know the ship’s size, capacity, overall design direction, and a few major features, but most restaurants, bars, entertainment venues, and attractions have not been announced yet.

So how does MSC World America compare to Carnival Destiny based on everything we know so far?

Quick Comparison: MSC World America vs Carnival Destiny

The biggest difference right now is size and capacity. Carnival Destiny is expected to be around 13,000 gross tons larger than MSC World America and carry roughly 1,200 more guests at maximum capacity.

Carnival Destiny Will Be Bigger Than MSC World America

MSC World America is already a massive ship at 216,638 gross tons. It has 22 decks, 2,614 staterooms, and space for up to 6,762 passengers.

Carnival Destiny will go even bigger.

Carnival says its new Ace Class ships will be around 230,000 gross tons, feature more than 3,000 guest staterooms, and carry almost 8,000 guests at full capacity.

That will make Destiny the largest ship ever built for Carnival Cruise Line and the largest ship in Carnival Corporation’s global fleet.

By the numbers, Carnival Destiny will be larger and carry more guests than MSC World America. The bigger question is how Carnival will use all that extra space.

Carnival Destiny Is Putting a Huge Focus on Ocean Views

One of the most interesting parts of Carnival Destiny’s reveal is its focus on connecting guests with the ocean.

Carnival is calling Destiny its most outward-facing mega-ship yet. The ship will feature more than 4.5 acres of glass, including large multi-story glass walls, a redesigned Lanai deck, and what Carnival says will be the highest number of ocean-view balcony staterooms at sea.

That is an interesting direction because many modern mega-ships have become increasingly focused inward, with giant promenades, attractions, shopping areas, and interior neighborhoods.

Carnival Destiny appears to be going the opposite direction by making ocean views a major part of the ship’s identity.

MSC World America also has some excellent ocean-facing spaces, especially the outdoor World Promenade and its open aft design. But Carnival is clearly making connection to the sea one of Destiny’s biggest selling points.

MSC World America Already Has Seven Distinct Districts

While we are still waiting to learn how Carnival Destiny will be divided, MSC World America is organized into seven districts designed around different types of cruise experiences.

  • Family Aventura
  • Aqua Deck
  • World Promenade
  • World Galleria
  • The Terraces
  • The Zen Area
  • MSC Yacht Club

This gives MSC World America a clear structure. Families can head toward Family Aventura and The Harbour, adults can relax in The Zen Area, food-focused guests can explore The Terraces, and Yacht Club guests have their own private ship-within-a-ship area.

Carnival has not yet revealed whether Destiny will use districts, zones, neighborhoods, or another layout concept.

More Than 70% of Carnival Destiny Will Be New

This may be the most exciting part of Carnival’s announcement.

Carnival says more than 70% of the venues and attractions on Carnival Destiny will be completely new concepts for the cruise line.

That includes new and reimagined dining, bars and lounges, immersive entertainment, attractions, and outdoor spaces.

That is important because Carnival Destiny is not simply being designed as a larger version of Mardi Gras or Carnival Celebration. Ace Class is supposed to represent a completely new generation of Carnival ships.

We still do not know exactly what those concepts will be, but Carnival says more details will be released later in 2026.

MSC World America Has the Advantage of Being Proven

MSC World America already has a major advantage in this comparison: you can actually sail on it.

The ship debuted in 2025 and offers 19 dining venues, 18 bars and lounges, seven districts, The Harbour family area, Cliffhanger over-water swing ride, an Aquapark, High Trail Ropes Course, World Promenade, and the largest MSC Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

Carnival Destiny sounds impressive, but many of its biggest features are still unknown.

We do not yet know its full restaurant lineup, waterpark design, entertainment venues, adults-only areas, main pool layout, nightlife concepts, or whether Carnival will introduce anything comparable to MSC Yacht Club.

Dining: MSC World America Has 19 Venues

MSC World America has 19 dining venues, including main dining rooms, buffets, complimentary fast-casual options, specialty restaurants, and private Yacht Club dining.

Highlights include Eataly, Butcher’s Cut, Kaito Teppanyaki, Kaito Sushi Bar, Hola! Tacos & Cantina, Paxos, and casual options around the ship.

Carnival has promised new dining concepts for Destiny, but it has not revealed the restaurant lineup yet.

Considering Carnival says more than 70% of Destiny’s venues and attractions will be new, dining could become one of the most interesting parts of the Ace Class reveal.

Families: This Could Be a Very Close Competition

MSC World America is currently one of MSC’s strongest family ships. It has The Harbour, an Aquapark, Jaw Drop dry slide, High Trail Ropes Course, Cliffhanger, Doremiland kids clubs, Sportplex, and dedicated spaces for kids and teens.

Carnival Destiny will almost certainly be heavily family-focused too. Carnival already carries a huge number of families, and a ship designed for almost 8,000 passengers will need major attractions and youth spaces.

However, Carnival has not revealed the specific family attractions for Destiny yet.

For now, MSC World America wins simply because we know exactly what it offers. That could change once Carnival reveals more of Destiny later this year.

MSC Yacht Club Could Be a Major Advantage

MSC World America has something Carnival Destiny has not announced an answer for yet: MSC Yacht Club.

Yacht Club is MSC’s private ship-within-a-ship experience, with exclusive accommodations, a private restaurant, Top Sail Lounge, private sundeck, butler service, concierge service, included drinks, Wi-Fi, room service, and other premium benefits.

MSC World America has the largest MSC Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

Carnival has not announced any comparable private enclave for Destiny. That does not mean one could not be coming, but so far, nothing similar has been revealed.

For guests who want a huge family-friendly mega-ship but also want a quieter private retreat, MSC World America has a clear advantage right now.

Destination Experience: Ocean Cay vs Carnival’s Paradise Collection

MSC World America sails Caribbean itineraries from Miami, including stops at Ocean Cay MSC Marine Reserve.

Ocean Cay is MSC’s private island in the Bahamas and offers a more relaxed, beach-focused experience. Yacht Club guests also receive access to Ocean House Beach and Ocean House Restaurant.

Carnival Destiny will sail to destinations in Carnival’s Paradise Collection, which includes exclusive destinations across the Caribbean, Bahamas, and Mexico.

Carnival has not yet released Destiny’s complete itinerary details, but its exclusive destination strategy will clearly be a major part of the Ace Class experience.

The Name Carnival Destiny Has Some History

The new Carnival Destiny is also reviving one of the most important names in Carnival’s history.

The original Carnival Destiny debuted in 1996 and was the world’s largest cruise ship at the time. It was also the first passenger ship to exceed 100,000 gross tons.

Now Carnival is bringing the Destiny name back for another milestone ship, this time at around 230,000 gross tons.

There is something fitting about that. The first Carnival Destiny pushed cruise ships beyond 100,000 gross tons, and the new Destiny will launch a completely new generation of Carnival mega-ships.

Which Ship Is Bigger?

Carnival Destiny will be bigger than MSC World America.

Ship Gross Tonnage Maximum Guests
MSC World America 216,638 GT 6,762
Carnival Destiny Around 230,000 GT Almost 8,000

Destiny will be about 13,000 gross tons larger and could carry roughly 1,200 more guests at full capacity.

Personally, that passenger count is one of the biggest things I will be watching. A ship carrying almost 8,000 guests needs excellent crowd flow, plenty of dining capacity, enough pools and outdoor space, and venues large enough to handle demand.

Bigger is exciting, but how Carnival manages those crowds will matter just as much as the attractions themselves.

My Take: Carnival Destiny Sounds Impressive, But I Want More Details

I think Carnival Destiny is one of the most interesting new cruise ships coming at the end of the decade.

The size alone is impressive, but what interests me more is the promise that over 70% of the venues and attractions will be new concepts. I also really like the focus on ocean views. More than 4.5 acres of glass and a more outward-facing ship design could make Destiny feel very different from other mega-ships.

At the same time, MSC World America already offers a very complete experience. It has seven districts, 19 dining venues, 18 bars and lounges, major family attractions, strong outdoor spaces, Ocean Cay itineraries, and MSC Yacht Club.

Carnival Destiny may eventually beat MSC World America in some categories, but we need to see more before making that call.

Right now, Destiny wins on size and potential. World America wins because we already know what the full experience looks like.

Final Thoughts: MSC World America vs Carnival Destiny

Carnival Destiny will be bigger than MSC World America, carry more guests, and introduce a new generation of Carnival cruise ships when it launches in summer 2029.

At around 230,000 gross tons and almost 8,000 guests at full capacity, Destiny will be Carnival’s largest ship ever. It will feature more than 4.5 acres of glass, the highest number of ocean-view balcony staterooms at sea, and more than 70% new onboard venues and attractions.

MSC World America is slightly smaller at 216,638 gross tons and 6,762 maximum guests, but it already offers seven districts, 19 dining venues, 18 bars and lounges, major family attractions, Ocean Cay itineraries, and the largest MSC Yacht Club in the Caribbean.

For now, MSC World America is the known quantity. Carnival Destiny is the exciting newcomer with a lot of potential and a lot still to be revealed.

The comparison will get much more interesting once Carnival begins revealing Destiny’s restaurants, bars, lounges, attractions, pools, and entertainment later this year.
