MSC Upgrade Bidding: How It Works and Does It Work For Yacht Club?
An MSC upgrade offer can make a better cabin tempting. But before you bid, it helps to understand the total cost, what benefits you receive, and whether you would actually prefer the new accommodation.
MSC UpGrade lets eligible guests bid for a higher cabin category. (FYI: A successful Yacht Club bid includes the associated Yacht Club experience benefits!)
How Does MSC Upgrade Bidding Work?
Check eligibility through MSC’s upgrade page or an invitation email. Eligible guests can submit offers for the categories presented, providing payment details.
If accepted, MSC charges the card automatically. If unsuccessful, you keep your original cabin without an upgrade charge. You can bid on multiple categories, but only one upgrade is charged.
So, only bid on categories you would genuinely enjoy!
A larger room might sound appealing, but think about how you use your cabin, whether a balcony matters, and which additional benefits you would actually use.
Are MSC Upgrade Bids Per Person or Per Cabin?
MSC’s currently states that bids are per cabin for the entire cruise. Its published terms also specify per-cabin pricing, with the upgrade amount added to your original fare. Check the final total shown on your offer before submitting.
MSC Upgrade Cost Example
Here is a hypothetical example for two adults on a seven-night cruise. These are just example figures, not current fares or suggested winning bids.
| Item | Example amount |
|---|---|
| Original cabin price | $2,400 |
| Your upgrade bid | $1,200 |
| New total price | $3,600 |
| Additional cost per night, per cabin | About $171 |
| Additional cost per person, per night | About $86 |
Would the new room and experience be worth another $86 per person each day to you? Looking at the nightly difference makes the decision easier than focusing only on the excitement of an upgrade email.
Does an MSC Yacht Club Upgrade Include All the Benefits?
Yes! MSC’s terms say successful Yacht Club and Aurea upgrades include the benefits associated with the new experience. Ordinary cabin upgrades generally retain the originally booked experience.
Yacht Club’s appeal extends beyond the suite. Its core features include a dedicated restaurant, Top Sail Lounge, private areas, butler and concierge service, priority embarkation and disembarkation, and included drinks and Wi-Fi.
That makes the decision different from simply paying for a larger balcony. Consider whether quieter shared spaces, dedicated dining and personal service would improve your vacation.

What If You Already Paid for Drinks or Wi-Fi?
The Aurea or Yacht Club experiences include these perks in their fare!
However, MSC’s upgrade terms say prepaid services are not refunded when an accepted Aurea or Yacht Club upgrade includes the same service at an equal or higher level. They also state that any higher Hotel Service Charge associated with the new category is payable.
For your budget, treat money already spent on overlapping packages as spent unless MSC confirms otherwise for your booking. Do not subtract an assumed refund when deciding what you can afford to bid.
How Much Should You Bid for MSC Yacht Club?
There is no useful universal dollar amount. A bid that feels reasonable for a long cruise could be poor value for a short sailing. Your original fare and the accommodation offered matter just as much as the bid itself.
- Price a confirmed upgrade first. Ask MSC or your travel advisor what it would cost to move into your preferred category directly.
- Compare the complete totals. Add your proposed bid to what you have already paid.
- Value benefits realistically. Included Wi-Fi has little financial value to someone who would otherwise stay offline.
- Set a firm ceiling. Decide your maximum before adjusting the offer.
- Keep room for other vacation costs. An upgrade should still leave you comfortable paying for travel, excursions and onboard extras.
If the bid approaches the price of a confirmed upgrade, ask what you gain by waiting. Conversely, a modest offer may be worth trying if you would remain perfectly happy in your original cabin.

Should You Give Up a Balcony for a Yacht Club Interior?
This deserves more thought than the word “upgrade” suggests. Picture your usual cruise day: do you spend quiet mornings and evenings on your balcony, or mostly use the cabin to sleep and change?
A Yacht Club interior may suit someone who values the shared Yacht Club spaces more than a private outdoor area. Keeping a balcony may be the better choice if natural light, ocean views from bed, or private outdoor time are central to your vacation.
Neither preference is wrong. Compare the actual accommodation offered using our MSC Yacht Club cabin guide, and avoid bidding on an interior simply because it carries the Yacht Club name.
When Will MSC Accept Your Upgrade Bid?
MSC’s U.S. FAQ says acceptance can happen any time after submission until departure, with notification by email. Pending offers can be modified or cancelled before acceptance and charging. Once accepted, the upgrade payment is final and non-refundable.
Can You Choose Your Upgraded Cabin?
No. MSC assigns the cabin and location. Linked reservations are evaluated separately, so travelling companions are not guaranteed upgrades together or nearby rooms. If you arrange a direct paid upgrade instead, MSC’s terms instruct you to cancel outstanding bids!
Is It Better to Book Yacht Club or Wait for an Upgrade?
Our recommendation is to book Yacht Club outright if it is essential to the trip. This is especially sensible when you are celebrating an occasion, coordinating with another cabin, or have a strong accommodation preference.
Bidding makes more sense when your original booking already meets your needs and an upgrade would be a welcome bonus. Start with a vacation you want, then decide whether the extra cost improves it enough.
