MSC Aurea vs Yacht Club: What Do You Actually Get for the Upgrade?

MSC Aurea vs Yacht Club: What Do You Actually Get for the Upgrade?

MSC Aurea sits in an interesting spot.

It gives you some of MSC's most useful premium perks, including flexible dining, thermal area access, priority boarding and access to the Top Exclusive Solarium. But then there is MSC Yacht Club, which can cost considerably more.

So what are you actually getting for that upgrade?

The easiest way to think about it is this:

Aurea upgrades your regular MSC cruise. Yacht Club changes how you experience the ship.

Aurea still puts you in the middle of the regular MSC experience, just with more flexibility and some additional perks. Yacht Club adds an entirely private side of the ship with its own restaurant, lounge, outdoor areas, butlers and concierge, while also bundling drinks and Wi-Fi into the fare.

That does not automatically mean everyone needs Yacht Club.

For some cruisers, Aurea may already provide exactly what they want.

The Biggest Difference: Yacht Club Gives You a Private Part of the Ship

This is probably the most important difference between Aurea and Yacht Club.

With Aurea, you are still primarily using the regular MSC ship.

You eat in the main dining room, visit the same bars and lounges, use the regular pools and spend most of your cruise alongside everyone else onboard.

Aurea makes that experience more comfortable.

Yacht Club gives you somewhere completely different to go.

Yacht Club guests have access to private venues that can include the Top Sail Lounge, Yacht Club restaurant, private sundeck and pool area, depending on the ship. MSC describes the concept as a "ship within a ship."

You can still leave Yacht Club and enjoy everything else onboard whenever you want.

But when the main pool deck is busy, the buffet is packed or you simply want somewhere quieter, you have Yacht Club to return to.

That private space is a huge part of what you are paying for.

Dining: My Choice vs a Private Restaurant

Aurea already solves one of the frustrations some cruisers have with traditional cruise dining.

Instead of being locked into the same dinner time each night, Aurea includes My Choice dining, which guarantees the ability to dine during the main restaurant's open dining hours.

That is a meaningful perk, especially on port days when you do not want to rush back for an early dinner.

Yacht Club takes it a step further.

Instead of simply receiving more flexibility in the regular dining system, Yacht Club has its own private restaurant, with flexible dining during opening hours.

That means the difference is not really:

Flexible dining vs flexible dining.

It is:

Flexible main dining vs your own private Yacht Club restaurant.

If dining is one of the main reasons you are considering an upgrade, that distinction matters.

Drinks and Wi-Fi Can Change the Price Comparison

This is where Yacht Club can start looking different when you actually compare the numbers.

Aurea does not automatically include MSC's Premium Extra drink package or a Wi-Fi package as standard benefits.

Yacht Club currently includes both.

MSC Yacht Club guests receive the Premium Extra drink package throughout the ship, subject to MSC's beverage-package rules, plus unlimited Browse Wi-Fi for two devices per person.

So if you were already planning to buy drinks and Wi-Fi, do not compare the fares like this:

Aurea fare vs Yacht Club fare

Instead, compare:

Aurea fare + drink package + Wi-Fi

with:

Yacht Club fare

The difference may still be significant, but this gives you a much more realistic idea of what the Yacht Club upgrade is actually costing you.

The Spa Difference Is Smaller Than You Might Expect

If your main reason for upgrading is access to the MSC Aurea Spa, Aurea may already give you much of what you want.

Aurea includes access to the Thermal Area for adults, by reservation, as well as a 10% discount on spa treatments purchased onboard.

Yacht Club also includes Thermal Suite access and the same 10% discount on onboard spa treatments, but MSC currently describes Yacht Club's Thermal Suite benefit as unlimited access for the duration of the cruise.

So the spa alone may not be enough reason to make the jump from Aurea to Yacht Club.

The bigger differences are everything surrounding it.

Aurea's Top Exclusive Solarium Is Not Yacht Club

Aurea guests also receive complimentary access to the Top Exclusive Solarium.

This is one of the reasons Aurea can be an attractive middle ground if you want somewhere quieter outdoors without paying Yacht Club prices.

But it is important not to confuse the Aurea solarium with Yacht Club.

Yacht Club has its own private outdoor setup, which can include a dedicated sundeck, pool, bar and dining area depending on the ship.

And unlike the Aurea solarium, those outdoor spaces are part of a much larger private complex that also includes the Yacht Club restaurant, lounge and concierge.

So Aurea gives you an exclusive outdoor perk.

Yacht Club gives you an exclusive section of the ship.

Service Is Where Yacht Club Really Changes the Experience

Aurea gives you several priority perks, but it does not include the personal service that defines Yacht Club.

Yacht Club includes a 24-hour butler and dedicated 24-hour concierge.

Your butler can assist with things around your suite and cruise, while the concierge gives you a dedicated place to handle reservations, questions and other requests without relying on the regular Guest Services desk.

It is difficult to assign an exact dollar value to that.

But it can have a big effect on how the cruise feels.

Aurea can make certain parts of an MSC cruise more convenient.

Yacht Club is designed to make much more of the cruise feel taken care of for you.

Aurea Suites Get a Few Extra Perks Too

One detail that is easy to miss is that Aurea Suites receive a few benefits that regular Aurea cabins do not.

MSC currently lists additional Aurea Suite benefits including priority tender and disembarkation, an in-suite espresso machine, complimentary ironing for two items per suite and the first minibar items for free.

That makes the comparison particularly interesting if you are deciding between an Aurea Suite and one of the less expensive Yacht Club cabins.

The gap may not be as simple as "regular cabin versus luxury suite."

What If the Aurea Cabin Is Better Than the Yacht Club Cabin?

This is where the decision gets interesting.

It is entirely possible to be choosing between a larger Aurea cabin or suite and a smaller Yacht Club cabin.

For example, someone may prefer the balcony, space or layout of an Aurea Suite but be comparing it against a Yacht Club Interior Suite.

In that situation, you are essentially choosing between:

More cabin + Aurea benefits

or

Less cabin + the full Yacht Club experience

And that is why I would not choose based on the word "suite" alone.

If you spend a lot of time on your private balcony or inside your cabin, the Aurea option could be very appealing.

If you care more about private dining, quieter spaces, drinks, Wi-Fi, service and the overall Yacht Club environment, the Yacht Club cabin may give you more of what you actually want from the cruise.

Is Aurea Enough?

For a lot of MSC cruisers, it absolutely can be.

Aurea makes particular sense if the things you care about most are:

  • Flexible My Choice dining
  • Thermal Area access
  • Access to the Top Exclusive Solarium
  • Priority boarding
  • A 10% discount on spa treatments
  • A premium cabin location or suite
  • A more upgraded MSC experience without paying for Yacht Club

You still get to enjoy everything the main ship has to offer.

If you are perfectly happy spending your days around the regular pools, restaurants, bars and lounges, you may not need the private Yacht Club enclave at all.

For a deeper look at the experience itself, read our guide to MSC Aurea.

When Does Yacht Club Start Making More Sense?

Yacht Club becomes much more interesting when you would actually use the things Aurea does not include.

Think about whether you would regularly use:

  • The private Yacht Club restaurant
  • Top Sail Lounge
  • The private Yacht Club sundeck and pool areas
  • Premium Extra drinks throughout the ship
  • Included Wi-Fi
  • The 24-hour concierge
  • Butler service
  • 24-hour room service
  • The Yacht Club minibar
  • Unlimited Thermal Suite access

If several of those are things you would otherwise pay for or genuinely value, comparing Yacht Club solely on the higher cruise fare does not tell the full story.

How Much More Is Yacht Club Really Costing You?

Instead of asking only how much more Yacht Club costs than Aurea, ask how much more it costs after adding the extras you would buy anyway.

For example:

Aurea Yacht Club
Aurea cruise fare Yacht Club cruise fare
+ Drink package if wanted Premium Extra included
+ Wi-Fi if wanted Browse Wi-Fi included
Thermal Area included Thermal Area included
My Choice dining Private YC restaurant
Top Exclusive Solarium Private Yacht Club areas
No butler Butler included
No dedicated YC concierge Dedicated concierge included

If you would not buy drinks, do not care about Wi-Fi and plan to spend most of your time around the main ship, Aurea may remain the much easier upgrade to justify.

But if you were already planning to add those extras, the true gap between Aurea and Yacht Club may be smaller than the initial fares make it appear.

MSC pricing changes constantly by ship, sailing and cabin type, so it is worth comparing actual fares for your specific cruise rather than relying on a fixed rule.

MSC Aurea vs Yacht Club: Which Experience Fits You?

Aurea and Yacht Club are not really competing versions of the same thing.

Aurea is an upgraded version of a regular MSC cruise.

You get useful premium perks without separating yourself from the main ship experience.

Yacht Club is a private experience inside the MSC ship.

You still have access to all of the restaurants, entertainment and activities outside Yacht Club, but you also have your own quieter place to retreat to, along with private dining, premium drinks, Wi-Fi and a much higher level of personal service.

If all you want is flexible dining, spa access and a more premium cabin experience, Aurea may already check the important boxes.

If what attracts you is the idea of stepping away from the busiest parts of the ship and returning to your own private restaurant, lounge, pool deck and concierge, that is the upgrade Yacht Club is really selling.
